Default Drain plug o-ring popped off!

I just changed the oil on my dyna. The oil filter I bought (drag specialties) did not include an o-ring for the drain bolt. When I drained the oil, the current o-ring broke in half. So I went to my local autozone and bought a variety pack incluing one that fits. After having added the new oil, I decided to check if any oil was leaking from the drain plug. I then noticed the o-ring was flared and extending outside of the bolt. Now, I didn't go crazy over tightening it, but I did give it an adequate firmness. I thought to myself... might as well leave it as it is. When I wiped the area with a rag, the o-ring popped off! Now I have fresh oil, a tightened drain plug, and no o-ring. My instant reaction was to tighten the drain plug a little more. Has anyone rode without a drain plug o-ring? Will any oil leak from this? If so, is there any application i can put around the bolt that will create a temporary seal? Thanks in advance.

I don't think the plug is tapered like a pipe plug, so it will likely leak if you didn't use a thread sealer.A bolt with a matching thread and a quick hand would work while you put the right o-ring on the plug, then put it back in.

It will either leak or fall out all together. Drain the oil into a sanitary bowl so you can pour it back in once you replace the o-ring.

Ha Ha thanks, If you squirted the o-ring out it was likely to big. I buy my oil and filters at my local indy shop and he always hands me a couple free o-rings with my receipt. Figure out the rite o-ring and buy a hand full of em.

I picked up a few at the local HD dealer, just in case something like that ever happens to me!

Sounds like you overtightened it last time to break the old one and again to squish out the new one. You don't have to tighten the **** out of that plug.

Do not ride without the O ring. Engine cost thousands, so replace it and lesson learned. Harley will give me o rings for the asking.
