I have a 96. I just rode four bikes with a 103 and could completely feel the difference. The added torque makes a huge difference. Also, If you properly upgrade the cams and heads in a 103, you'll have more horsepower than a CVO.

In stock form, I can't tell the difference from a 96 & a 103. Even with a stage 1, the gain is minimal and you would never notice it from the seat of your pants. Yes, the 103 will show a little more torque on the dyno, but very little. 6th gear is very usable on my 96" Dyna at 55+. My 96 is stage 1, SE race tuner & dyno tuned, so that helps it some from stock.
From all the dyno's I have seen on this site, including my 103, apples to apples is about 10 ft lbs more torque; 10% is quite a bit more. Not bad considering the the price stayed the same.

My 88 in my Dyna will run circles around the 96 in my 08 Street Glide but that's apples to oranges... Good luck with your decision!

Well, I'm not going to post the pics as I have them elsewhere but I went to day to an earlier dealer where I had only looked at new bikes. Since I opened the floor to all bikes I went to see a 2009 FLSTC with a lot of extras that were all on my I want them list. I bought the bike with all those goodies plus 1 year extended warranty plus HD basic rider course for $15,240 OTD which was about $13,200 for the bike, $1k for warranty/course and the rest taxes etc.

I'm pretty sure for my riding style this will be all the bike I need. It has V&H BSL pipes and stage 1 a/c which should be plenty for solo only riding. The rest is in my thread in the softail forum. I think 96 will be plenty here though.

Do let us know when you start saving for the big bore kit, cams, head work, and . . . .

Yep, upgrading the motor was something I was very confident I would not do. My 96" was good enough.

That was 5 years ago. I am now breaking in my 103", high compression pistons with SE 255 cams and Thunder Header exhaust.

Yep, crow doesnt taste too bad with a little salt and when I twist the throttle, makes me smile real big. Never say never.

Way too much for that bike but I guarantee you they won't move much off that price.

The 96 will have more power than you will ever need. I've ridden both and could barely notice a difference.

Something you have to think about also is the weight of the bike and weight to power ratio. A 96 in a Super Glide is not the same as a 96 in a Heritage. In running order stock, the heritage weighs 82 lbs. more....that's HUGE in bike terms.

You can put similar hp & tq to the ground, but a heavier bike is not going to react to it like a lighter bike. It takes about 10 ft/lb of torgue to offset 80 lbs in bike weight...you can do the math easily based on dyno tq #s & bike weights in stock running order.

Basically a stock 96 in a Super Glide will be quicker than a stock 103 in a Heritage because the TQ to weight ratio is slightly better in the 96 Dyna. Again it takes 10 ft/lb of torque to offset 80 lbs & the 103 has 8 more ft/lb of tq at the flywheel, which transfers to slightly less than that at the rear wheel & the Heritage weighs 82 lbs more.

Having said all that, a 96 will handle any bike just fine, especially for the way you describe you want to ride.

I thought that I read that the "B" or Balanced motor in the Softail models have a little less H.P. and Torque due to their design. Is this accurate?
