Bike impaled on car, driver nearly escapes
ROCKLEDGE, Fla. —
A hit-and-run driver involved in a deadly crash is in jail after leading deputies on a chase that ended on a golf course, officials said.
Video from a sheriff's helicopter showed the take-down of David Prestano, 29, just minutes after investigators said he plowed into a motorcyclist, killing him.
A Rockledge police officer said he spotted Prestano speeding along Murrell Road just moments before the impact.
"One of our officers had radioed into dispatch there was a vehicle traveling southbound on Murrell Road at about 95 mph in a 45 (mph zone)," said Officer Michael Cadore of the Rockledge Police Department.
The car came to a stop with the motorcycle impaled into its front end. The driver jumped out and ran to a nearby golf course.
Once on the golf course, Prestano appeared to try to hide from officers and the infrared camera above, but the helicopter spotter was able to direct officers right to him, with guns drawn.
When officers surrounded him, Prestano surrendered.
"Further research showed that this individual had a suspended driver's license. He shouldn't have been driving, regardless whether his license was valid or not. He shouldn't have been traveling at that rate of speed," said Prestano.
According to police, because they arrested Prestano just a few months ago for reckless driving, he is now being held without bond.
The name of the victim has not been released.
