Oil filter wrench question

Oil filter wrench question
Does anyone know if one of the oil wrenches sold at Wally World will work on HD filters? Or do I have to get a HD brand because it's some odd ball size or something like that?

Best thing you can do is buy K&N oil filters, you can get them at any automotive parts store, they have a 9/16 bolt head molded into the top of the filter so they're easy to installa and remove. Also have better specs than the HD filters.

The one I got at Pep Boys works just fine on my HD filter.
The HD oil filter has an extra notch or one less notch, can't remember. So the one's you would buy from anywhere other than an hd dealer may be the correct size but won't turn the filter if it's tight. It just skips.

if you have an oil cooler, it puts the filter right at the cps. the harley filter has a cutout in it so it wont hit the sensor. if you don't have the oil cooler, it isn't an issue.
you can buy the hd filter wrench for about $12.00

I like this one from Cycle Gear:

clears the sensor and lets me use a long 3/8 extension to clear the shifter. cut my oil change time in half from using an old style band type wrench.
disregard the bad reviews IMO.

After having a hell of a time getting the HD filter off I bought one of the K&N filters with the nut welded onto the front. Looks just as good and it's 100 times easier to get a wrench on.

Dont waste your money on the HD wrench. Just be a man and take it off with your hands. If you cant break it loose start the bike and go for a short ride so it gets hot. Then just use your hand to break it loose. Obviously dont take it all the way off until its moderately cooled down again. Then as said above use a K&N filter in the future because it has the bolt head on it which makes it easier to install and remove. Plus the K&N filter is a little better quality.
Some other things you can use to take the filter off is large channel locks if you can fit get a good angle on the filter. A strap wrench can work too. Or the filter wrenches at walmart may have a size that fits.
Hope this helps
