Default Walked Out of Dealership tried to buy son 2012 Harley

My son is 25 years old. Rides my bike every now and then. Anyway he decides he wants to make the leap and buy a brand new 2012 Harley. So we head down to the main dealership here in town. Where we live the weather is always gorgeous and it never rains. Bikes sell like hotcakes. I figured we wouldn't get much off MSRP and I was right. We negotiated for an hour and finally got $1000 off MSRP because they had 3 of the exact same bike on the lot.

We go to the finance guy and start working out the numbers. He tells me the monthly payment and I nearly flip. I ask how much is the total financed and he tells me a figure nearly $20,000. I ask where he got that from. He tells me that in addition to the price of the bike there is a $499 document fee and almost $3,000 in fees for assembling the bike and shipping the bike from Minneapolis to here. And the APR on the loan... 14% (my son has a documented $80,000/yr income, no debt, perfect credit with 720 FICO).

I go to walk out and he calls in the head sales manager. Total sleezebag. The guy tells me if we leave if we ever come in again we will not get the $1000 off MSRP and in fact, we were never welcome back again.

So I told him to screw off and we left.

Why are car/cycle salesmen such low lifes?

Have you never bought a new vehicle before? They always add that stuff. It's your job to negotiate it out before you head to finance. Not to mention, why didn't prearrange financing through a bank or credit union?

None of that sounds right.

3k in what?

720 credit score and a 14% rate? No way.

Someone misinformed you or you misunderstood. I don't even believe ANY dealer would treat a customer like that.

Name of the dealer?

And how is the weather always perfect? In NY? No way.....

I call BS.

Buy used. I am not sure about NY but here in Texas there are plenty of used bikes with low miles. And I would suggest not to finance. I go by the pricpal if you can't pay for it you don't need it. Have your son save up a little longer. I know it isnt the popular answer but it sure is nice to have no debt.

When I bought me bike I found a used bike with less that 50 miles and saved $4000 off MSRP and $7000 off of set-up/delivery/assembly cost.

Also if buying from a dealer tell them that you want the out the door cost. Cause they will give you a price and then when doing the paperwork find a way to add on.

If your son makes 80K a year and has no debt, why would he be financing a bike?

Ain't no way the weather is nice ANYWHERE in NY.

That's the main reason I left.

Car, bike, home salesman are all sleazy. I've got friends who are all of those, so it is more of a generalization. I alway prepare to get ****ed no matter what.
