Gear drive maybe the best option, in the long run, but may not be the cheaper. It may not be an option at all if your engine doesn't "mike" within allowable limits to use a gear drive set-up. I inspected my tensioners and found the outboard one worn and cracked and decided to replace both tensioners. I also had to replace my inner cam bearings, as they were sub-standard, and identified during the 2000 HD production year. Some got changed, and some weren't. Mine wasn't. There are 3 options I know of, depending on your year of HD and motor. Stay with the original tensioners, upgrade to the new style hydraulic tensioner set-up, or go with the gear drive set-up. Hit the search button and start reading. Lot of info there....

Had to laugh to myself. Noticed I hadn't posted since July. I can see HDF hasn't changed. The peanut gallery is still alive and well. They might even have something useful to offer.

So, my sincere apologies. Sorry I was at work and didn't have time to do a thorough research of the archives. My bad. Thought some might be interested in the JP Cycle blog. I was off base there. Hey, I realize now it was only a technical blog about a Harley engine. No importance here.

Seems there's mixed results. For some not an issues. For others major $$. I know, even though I've a 2009, I'll be asking the mechanic to inspect every 15,000 miles.

Peace,

Bones

Yep, you're right. You only have to worry about the compensator failing and excessive pinion shaft runout taking out the oil pump. LOL

Cam chain tensioner...Got mine from Fredricks of Hollywood.
Actually replaced mine on my Road Glide at 20,000. mi.
I do not beat on my bikes. Was not worn to a point of failure.
However I was putting in a 203 cam, so did tensioner.
