Cool GPS Software for Backroads Cruisers
You'll find this thread helpful if you:
(1) cruise backroads
(2) use a GPS receiver for navigation
(3) like to pre-plan a route and stick to it
(4) create and upload routes from your PC to your GPS receiver
Problem: Some software, like the HDRidePlanner, does not save or transfer the route to the GPS if I put too many waypoints (which is necessary to force any route-planning software to take backroads instead of main roads). I think HDRideplanner only allows 10 waypoints. I have 100-mile farm-road routes that require 50 plus waypoints.
Solution: Tyre to Travel software--free download, and easy to use. There are upgrades available, but the free version does everything I need.
From the website: TyreToTravel is the platform for searching, making and sharing routes. And Tyre is the program that integrates Google Earth / Maps with Tom Tom or Garmin.
A few things to note:
(1) The number of waypoints you can add is limited by your GPS receiver and Googlemaps, not Tyre.
(2) Tyre will "calculate" your route so it can be converted into google-maps or mapquest-type format. This means it will provide a purple line along the route. If you exceed 10 waypoints using Tyre, it will save the file, but upon re-opening the file in Tyre it will give a "can not calculate" error. No worries, though, as this is only prevents you from using Tyre to convert it into the google maps format for viewing or printing. The route will transfer to your GPS receiver just fine.
(3) Not all GPS receivers accept routes from your PC. If it does, it will be listed as a feature in the manual or website.

Interesting software. I'll download it after I check my manual. Thanks for the link.
Have you had any issues from the pop up ads in the free version?

Tyre is a pretty cool program to use. I have been usmg it for a couple of years now. It uses google maps when you plot your course. I have a tomtom and make custom itinerarys using tyre and transfer them to the tomtom.
