Iron Butt Rally Has Begun
The Iron Butt Rally has started.
It is held on odd numbered years.
You have to have been certified with an IBA ride to be eligible.
For the most part a lottery determines who is awarded an invitation.
Some are reserved for previous and elite competitors.
To complete the rally a rider will need to cover 11,000 miles in 11 days.
To finish at the top, count on riding right at 14,000 miles during the 11 days.
Here is a link to the IBR daily blog and an overall summary of the event.

They state more people have left earth's gravity than have finished the rally.

1st leg of the IBR is done and 1st scoring is out.
94 bikes remain in the field. One had an accident, rider is OK but out of the rally.
3 Harleys making the run. They are running in 22nd, 41st and 69th place respectively.
Yamaha FJR's are killing the run so far.
Mileage ridden during the 1st leg has ranged between 2400 and 4200 miles depending on the rider.
The 2nd leg goes west so the mileage covered should increase with increased speed limits and no east coast traffic.
The standings, bike models and mileage ridden are at the bottom of the last blog entry:

For the life of me... I don't get why people do this. I've run 1,000 mile days quite a few times (my brothers place in Oregon happens to be 1010 miles from my place in San Diego)... but what's the point of this?
Not judging... just really don't get it. But have fun!

Just because I don't "get it" doesn't mean there's nothing to get.
And I totally agree... Your life, your bike, your money, your ride... do whatever makes you smile.
