Old FLH bags on a Softail?
I acquired an old set of slab-sided FLH bags that I'd like to put on my '05 Fatboy. I like that they are narrower than current bags.
I've searched until my fingers are sore for an after-market kit that will accommodate these bags. No luck so far. There are dozens of bagger conversion frames for the newer FLH bags, but from what I understand, they won't work with the older (pre-'79?) bags.
Does anybody have a lead on a manufacturer that might make something for my application?

You probably will have to make your own from scratch, or adapting existing brackets for those bags to be fitted on your bike.
I've done it on a my 2012 Sportster, building my brackets from steel bars:

Now, I have no idea how to fix this on a Softail, but it is doable...

If they're the ones with the clips on the bottom, you just need to find the hangers, They mount to the fender struts, which is probably the area where you would have to get creative. J&P has parts in their vintage catalogue, or you could scrounge a pair at a swap meet. Make sure you have clearance over the pipes, axle nut, brake caliper, etc. because they will move with the suspension.

No bolt on kit you'll have to so some adapting with the older rail system . Was a post in here a year or so ago somebody did something similar with pictures of how he did it turned out nice .

J&P only makes a hanger kit for the old style bags that cover FXST models through '99. Not sure what changed in 2000 but if you can find someone with a set, maybe you could copy and modify as needed for yours.

Proteus, I think you've sparked the answer. Hanging the bags with Easy Brackets will locate the bags correctly but those brackets provide no support to keep the bottom of the bags from flopping around.

I'll fab up some tubing to provide stability to the bottom of the bags, maybe with a cross bar behind the tire.
It's a given that after I fab up the mounts someone will come out with a slick kit that looks factory. Isn't that the way it goes?
Thanks all!
