Blowing out oil

Blowing out oil
I have a 1990 heritage with around 50,000 miles on it. The last 2 times I started it, it blowed out oil from the the hose at the bottom of the engine. It blows out a puddle and then stops after it runs for a minute or so. I don't start it very often because I usually ride my ultra. Anyone have this problem or know whats up? Thanks

Yes, its called sumping. There is a small ball (check valve) that looks similar but larger than a BB from a BB gun. Resides under the large screw on top of your oil pump. Gravity is causing the oil from the oil tank to run down past the ball, which is not sealing, and into the crankcase. When you start it, it will blow some excess out of the breather tube. The oil pump cannot scavenge all of the excess oil when you start it up so it blow what it can't handle out of the vent tube, hence your puddle. Its common and can be corrected by pulling out the check valve ball to see if there is some crud in the seat. If not you can lap the bore and ball together to see if it helps. Just watch when you pull the screw to get at the ball. There is a spring under the cap. Not a lot of tension but enough. The idea is to get the check valve ball to seat again so the oil from the tank doesn't run past the check valve and fill the crankcase with oil. The oil is suppose to stay in the oil tank.

1990 Evo's were some of the last bottom breather motors built by the moco.
The oil sits in the oil bag and is gravity fed to the oil pump. The oil pump has a check ball in it to prevent all the oil from bypassing the pump and filling up the crank case with oil. Over long periods of time just sitting there and not being run, oil gets passed the check ball and goes into the crank case. Once you start it up the oil will be scavenged from the crank case and dump out the hose onto the ground. It happens a lot with Evo's that sit around and do not get used.
Shame to see a great old evo sitting around and not being ridden...

What you can do is, ride it and get it good and hot, try changing the oil, or put a pan under where the hose is and pour the oil back in the tank when it stops pouring out.,,
