I know I'll look like an idiot here, but here goes--
Got a new (to me) '06 Fatboy a few weeks ago, and have been having a helluva time trying to get the seat off to hook up the battery tender. Mostly my struggles are probably due to me trying so hard to be gentle and not scratch something, but what screws am i dealing with?

Dont know about the FB but I just unscrew the back tab and pull the seat backwards.
Dont worry about a dumb questions because everbody here is way smart

Should just be a thumb screw behind the seat and a tongue in the front. Remove screw and lift from the rear.

I'm assuming a softail is the same way as a Dyna or Sporty as far as the grab strap goes..
Is it the stock seat? If so the passenger grab strap may be causing your problems. The strap isn't fastened to the seat, it's fastened to the bike.
Remove the screw on the rear of the seat, slide the seat backwards to disengage the tongue from the front, then you're going to have to carefully work the strap backwards as you pull the seat forward being careful not to scratch your tank with the seat.
Once you have the seat off, there is 1 bolt holding the strap on the bike....remove the nut & remove the strap & put the nut back on the bolt. leave the strap off the bike then removing the seat will be a 10 second job.

The seat brackets fit tightly over the mounting bosses. After loosening the screws, take a flat blade screwdriver and gently pop one side off.

all good answers. the owners manual tells you exactly how to remove your seat, as well as other need to know info.

I usually turn it sideways after disengaging the tongue, so no risk to scratch anything. Staying on the left side of the bike I hold the seat with one hand and with the other I help the strap out towards me to the back of the seat, while the tongue is hanging on the right side away from everything.

Seat strap was the first thing I took off & threw away on my Dyna. No, wait, the reflectors and warning labels were first.....
