derby cover gasket
I'm getting ready to do my first primary oil change on my 2013 Ultra Classic. I know it takes the orange O-ring type gasket but the local HD dealership parts guy told me the black round solid disk type gasket was better. Can that type gasket be used on my cover?

I have never tried the flat gasket with a grooved cover but if the cover has the groove I personally would use the O ring style. I have re-used both type gaskets and no problems with leaks. FYI HD sells a kit that comes with 3 "O" rings for your drain plugs and a derby gasket

You can use either one and both work just fine. The flat gasket is most often used on covers that were designed before the change . The covers will fit your just fine with a flat gasket.

i change the derby cover O ring once on my 85 fl. you can reuse them way more than a couple of times. i would reuse it, if it leaks then change it.

I'm still using the original orang gasket on my '09. Not a thing wrong with it, no leaks, *ever*. I won't get another until it *does* start to leak, but since it's in a position that really doesn't get abused hard at all, I don't see needing a new one yet for still a long time. BTW, I change my oil in the primary at the same time I change the engine oil, and I'm religious about doing that at every 3000 miles, so the derby cover has been of an awful lot of times with 60,000 miles on the bike. Remember not to tighten down those derby cover bolts or you'll play hell getting them off next time! Just barely hand-tight is all they need!
One thing I did do one day though, I stopped at the parts dep't. at the H-D and bought 5 or 6 o-rings for the drain plugs, because they tear up sometimes if you over-tighten them a little too much on accident.
