Riding trikes in USA
Hi, I'm a new user on this forum and I have a question...
I just got a new FLHTK 2014 and I have a friend who just got a 2014 trike and we are planning to ride the route 66 next year.
We are from Quebec in Canada and for trikes we do not need a motorcycle class on our licences. my question is;
Do you know if my friend can ride is trike on a car licence in all states on route 66 ? (IL, MO, KS, OK, TX, NM, AZ, CA)
Thanks!

You can go to the website of the Department of Motor vehicles in each state to find out. Here is a part of the Oklahoma driver license manual.
Many states require a separate license
endorsement to operate a three-wheel
motorcycle. This requires the rider to
pass both a written and a skills test. The
purpose of this supplement is to help
prepare riders to complete the written
exam for a three-wheel motorcycle
license or endorsement. This information
is provided in addition to that offered in
the first part of this Motorcycle Operator
Manual (MOM), so when preparing
to take the written test, begin by
reading the information on two-wheel
motorcycles thoroughly. It provides
information on safe operation of your
motorcycle in traffic. This supplement
contains information specific to the safe
operation of a three-wheel motorcycle,
including both three-track motorcycles
and motorcycles with sidecars.

AFAIK, any vehicle with 3 wheels is defined as a motorcycle in all 50 states. That's how trikes like the can-am don't need to conform to NHTSA crash and safety standards like 4 wheelers.
As mentioned above, your valid Canadian DL is all you need to ride down here.
