A question of revs
Well I was riding my FXD 35 up a long straight hill and giving it some!
She was pulling well and the S&S slip ons sounded great, and then a thought came to me!?
80 odd mph in 4th, how close to the red line is that? I've not got a rev counter has anyone got any idea what sort of revs I was pulling? I don't wanna blow my engine. (88 inch, 6speed)

80mph in 4th? I'd think you were maxing if out of close to it. I'm surprised that you don't have a tach on your bike.

Well, mine's a 103, and I'm in break in so I'm capped to 3500 rpm. That said, 3500 RPM is 80 or so in 5th and over 100 indicated in 6th, so I'd say you're below redline but not by a lot at 80 in 4th.

In the upper 4k range I'd wager.
The twinkies have a rev limiter to keep you from going too far, the rev limiter will stop you WELL BEFORE you get to the danger zone.
When I had my '06, I'd regularly bounce off the rev limiter. No harm. Saw the guy I sold my bike to at a swap meet last weekend, loves the bike and still running strong for him.

These big twins will deceive the uninitiated when it comes to rpm's. You are doing it the right way asking a question. These guys are right the engine will let you know when it is at it's limits. Years ago before electronic rev limiters we used to push them to valve float.

The car survived that day, broke down the next day on them...I forget what, but the engine didn't blow.
I have blown an engine by overrevving though...was a speedboat, was running a low pitch prop on it, held way past redline too long, blew out a piston arm right out the block!
