Starter Issues (again)
Ok, I got an 2002 Heritage, FLSTC with a 95", 10:1 pistons, heads done by Hildreth Performance w/a 204 cam. I'm on my 5th starter. Yes, I know I should have put CR's in at the get go but the builder didn't mention it and I had no clue. The bike has about 90,000 on this set up and the current starter has been in for the longest, around 6 yrs. I haven't put as many miles on it during that time though since I've got 4 other bikes to ride. My question is, when it starts the kick back, is it the actual starter or is it something else that can be replaced? I've got new battery and cables and i forgot what starter is in there now but it's not stock. Was told that it would last forever. I live in another state now so the former tech is no long available. I've still got my stock cyclinders, heads cams and pistons so would it be benifical to have those done to 95" or just get another starter. TIA

you are reaching the life expectancy of the stock bottom end (100,00 miles)
you might consider a crank assembly rebuild w/bearings bushings then have the heads machined for CR's it'll help relieve the stress of a hi comp engine on your starter...whenever I install a new starter I pull the plugs then turn the engine over for at least 30 seconds, this helps your starter establish a wear pattern it may sound like a bunch of hooey but it works...

Before you go pulling the starter and replacing, I would take a good look at the solenoid contacts. You might find that these contacts are burnt and need cleaning. Pull your pos battery cable before you mess with it. It only take a couple of those small screws to pull the cover and see if this is the issue.

Just wondering how many miles you got on that starter 6 Gun. I've got the 1.4 also and worked great for the first 3-4 yrs.
Thanks SpiderPig, I'll take a look at that. Think I'll get the emergency button to fit on there also.
There was something several yrs ago about CR's for the spark plug holes for Evo's but hadn't heard anthing for twinkies

When it kicks out in mid-turn, it's usually the starter clutch.
10.5:1 on an Evo with 100,000 miles. No CR's, and just replaced the starter clutch on the original stock starter last year. It helps to keep it dialed in...if the starter doesn't have to turn over much, it lasts a lot longer.
