Default Mechanical Speedo vs. Electronic Speedo

Hi all,
I am in the middle of rebuilding a 99 Softail FXST which currently has a mechanical speedo connected to the front rim/axle. I was looking at the transmission last night and see where the speed sensor is for an electronic speedometer. My question is has anyone converted from mechanical to electronic and if so was it difficult? I imagine I would need a new speedometer and wiring of sorts. If anyone could shed some light on this I would certainly appreciate it. Just wondering if it would be worth the effort?

Thanks
