Default Throttle Return Cable Snaped At 85+mph today ?!?

I was just riding home on my commute back from work today (cruisin at around 85mph ) when I saw break lights up ahead, as I happened to be full throttle and accelerating I pushed the throttle forward and began breaking when suddenly i heard a snap.

F@#& !... the car infront of me was now a lot closer and even through my throttle was nearly fully returned closed... I was still accelorating.

Obvsiously, i just hit the clutch in and swerved over ...but what a pain im the *** in the middle of rush hour .

Anyways when I got home i was hopping the cable just came off the track, but no...

Yep, opened her up and she was broke right in two...

So by chance does anyone happed to know the part number on the return cable or have a part bike they want to give or sell me that cable off of?

Thanks in advance

56401-96 on Ronnie's parts diagrams; scroll down to the yellow bar that says "click here for OEM fiche parts", click on "motorcycle", and fill in the blanks as they appear. Good site for finding parts.

that's the first "return cable" I have ever seen broken. ( riding since 1951 before "return cables" were added))

there is no load on that puppie..the carb/efi spring returns the throttle??
Maybe you should look for a bind in the other cable ??

I'd check the chrome throttle housing for any burrs that might cut your next one.

I know, that was the first one i have ever seen snap, and what makes it so weird is that cable (besides the snap point) is in perfect condition with no rust at all...

It must have kinked just exactly when i pushed the throttle back forward and some how the kink ran over the side lap in the throttle and cut /snapped it.

Probably the throttle housing was loose enough to allow the cable to kink...

Its strange, but at least its an easy fix... Just weird

There must have been a lot of strain on that, take your time and read the manual on adjusting the cables when you put the new one on.

Manual? Haha

No I like taking the manly route...
Do it myself ... F&*@ it up
Do it again.. F&@# if up again
Call my buddies over (who of couse are all to manly to read a manual)
Have a few beers F@&# it up once more

Then finally when no ones around I tell my wife... She reads the manual tells me how to do it
Then when its fixed I tell all my boys I fixed it without the manual...

just got to stick to the plan ... It was handed down from my father and his father before him..and Its been working for years...lol =P

Same thing happened to me but luckily I was still in my driveway when it happened. I figured it was my lucky day in a weird way. At least I wasn't 100 miles away.
