Default to buy or not to buy

found this fxrs-sp in philly for 4500. He said it has a small oil leak that needs maybe a a quarter of a quart every 800-1000 miles.

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/mcy/4385768020.html

it's the cheapest I've seen and I plan on learning how to rebuild an evo sometime in the future anyway so maybe it's not so bad?

appreciate anybody's input.

He also states that the engine has had new gaskets "from the base up".

Yet it has an oil leak. Hmmm....

Well, if you're going to take it all to bits anyway it might be an ideal project, but $5,000 seems quite high for a 25 year old bike...

6k seems to be the going rate for fxr's in my area so this being on the lower end I'm not sure either!

Where is the oil leak coming from? You guys have the best prices on these FXR's out east. So it's not uncommon to find them around that price range in your area.

Not so much for an FXR though. I just bought this one out of Indiana for $5200 and it's in excellent condition. It would easily sell for $7k t0 $8k here in CA.

If you're OK with the oil leak, fine. I would find out exactly where it's leaking from. IMHO, the FXR was one of the best bikes ever made. Good Luck.

28,000 miles.
everything is stock accept the exhaust.
than why did he replace all the gaskets? what is the reason for replacing every one of them if the bike has no modifications to the engine? just replaced them because he wanted to? why is it still leaking if the All of the gaskets are replaced.

this is JMO but, if your looking for a Harley project you can find one a lot cheaper that that.

I wouldn't go for it but that JMO

Looks good from here, seeing them in person is best. I would want to see where that leak is coming from though. $4500 is a good price for an unboogered up FXR.
Fall Winter is the best time to buy, but it seems that the great 5k FXR buys aren't happening very often any more. Looks like it could be a very worthy candidate, if it is what you want. Good luck.
