Default Pre summer maintenance.

This is my first harley. Got it a month ago 1998 sportster. Bike has 5k miles on it.

Just changed the engine oil. Primary oil. Checked and adjusted the primary chain. Gonna replace spark plugs here soon.

What other maintenance things I should I consider.

Check brakes and change brake fluid if needed.

Congrats on the new bike!
If it has the original tires they are very old. Even if they have plenty of tread left I would replace them.

If the tires are OK, air them up then lube your cables. Check the battery. Get a new one if it needs it and put it on a tender to prolong it's life. If you don't have a tender, get one. You've done pretty much everything else that needs to be done. Gas it up and go.

Brakes look good. Brake fluid looks good. Tires look ok for now. Will probably need new tires by the end of summer. Battery is good. I have and use a tender. Cables could use a good lubing

You might want to wash and wax it to.

Good grief, somehow I trip the post!

Dupe post. Oops.

Buy yourself a HD Service Manual, if they're still available.

If the tires are original (check DOT code), replace them. Why even risk having 16 year-old rubber coming apart on you.

I have a service manual

How do you check the tire code. Is there a discussion on that already?

Tires have a date code on them.

Look at the date code for the tire on the sidewall (Dunlop HD example):

DOT DATR M2AM XXYY

XX = Week of manufacture
YY = Year of manufacture

DOT DATR M2AM 1607 = 16th week of 2007
