Does this sound REALLY expensive to mount/balance tires!?
Hi,
Seems like quite a few folks put a 180 on the rear tire of their street bob. So, I've got the itch to do it as well. I was thinking of doing that, and an Avon 110 up front.
A small shop here in Naperville, IL quoted me $92 to mount and balance just the rear tire, and $78 for the front. Really!? Does that sound expensive, or is that the going rate?
I told him what i was doing, and he advised that a 160 to 180 is a bad idea. He mentioned the mushroom effect and that I would have less rubber on the road.

I paid less than that for a jack and service manual. I brought my front tire and wheel to my Indy and he charged me $10.00. You can save a lot of money investing in a jack

25-45 per tire in my area to mount and balance is normal depending on model.Do your pipes have to come off?

Here is what your shop guy was talking about - it is possible to increase the size of your rear tire but it defeats the purpose of more rubber on the road if you don't go with the correct width rim

They figured that since you're in Naperville you gots money to spend. 100 bucks to mount both tires should be reasonable. But yes, the dude is correct about going to a different size

Those prices are high if it is just for "mount and balance." If he is removing the tires from the bike and then mounting and balancing new tires and re-installing, then you are getting a very good deal!

I pay my local Cycle Gear shop $30 per wheel to fit the new tires - I remove the wheels and take them in.
No balancing involved - I use Dyna Beads.

I pay $90- for the set. Ride the bike in, he removes wheels & tires, mounts & balances new rubber and reinstalls the wheels back on the bike-
