I would suggest doing some test rides. Narrow it down from the test rides then rent to see.
Want some comfort, small light but got some guts to it. Check out The Dyna bikes to start with.

I think it depends on what size guy your are.

A few years back I bought a '99 Sporty 1200 Custom from a friend to basically save his life, and to a degree, some money.
The bike was sitting in his depreciating and he wasn't riding it, mainly because of being to nervous to ride, unless he was drinking.

I brought the bike home and got it in a saleable condition and rode it for a couple of weeks before I sold it (I made exactly $50!!! on that bike).

My wife later told me that I looked like a circus bear riding a tricycle when I rode that bike.

I think a Dyna or perhaps a Softail is about as small as I could, or would like to go, but that's JMHO.

I was feeling the same, I bought a 2013 Slim for short jaunts and kept my 95 Dresser, I had a new 91 FXR before and never had a Softail, so the decision was easy for me to get a Softail.

I have a BMW K1200GT and bought a Dyna as my smaller sporty bike. Now the BMW collects dust from not being used.

I would look into a custom bobber as a bar hopper. Great deals out there on some awesome scoots.

Similar situation last year for me, but I was really particular in what bike I wanted. Trolled Craigslist and eBay for almost 2-yrs and stumbled across my 03 XL1200S. Wife wouldn't let me get a Buell Lightning so...got the next best thing (to me). Just be patient, look around and the good buy/deal will come your direction.
