Default 103 needs dyno tune for pipes?

I run only carbs so don't no much on efi I'm helping my buddy out with his 2012 dyna 103 stage 1 filter and d&d Fatcat pipe.. He wants the bike to run cooler and Harley is trying to sell him a 800$ screaming Eagle race tuner with dyno tuning... Really he's after cooler moter all he has now is a canned download... So is this 800 tune the way to go or is there better options ?

I think just about anyone would appreciate a GOOD tune, we all deserve one.

A tuner will add more fuel to the engine which will help it run cooler. There's lots of tuners out there that will do the same thing as the Harley tuner will for half the price. Check out fuelmoto.com I could be wrong but I don't think a dyno tune will make the engine run cooler, I think they want you to do the dyno so they can get more money out of you. I think usually the people that get the dyno done are the ones that are worried about getting every ounce of power out of their bike they can get.

Any tuner will work. The reason the bike runs hot is the engine is already lean from the factory. When you add the intake and exhaust, it leans out more. bdtaylor is correct, there are better tuners for half the price that don't require an actual dyno tune. Fuelmoto.com is definitely a good place to look. I have always used power commanders on all my previous bikes. I just upgraded to a 2014 Ultra Limited and went with the PV from fuelmoto, the guys over there are a class act. Best customer support you can ask for and if you purchase from them, you get unlimited tunes when you upgrade your bike.

back in 07 the SERT was one of,,if not the best tuner,,,,Now there are a bunch of good tuners out their..
and IMO the SEpST is still one of the best for people that don't change/make mods to their engine all the time and don't want to mess with the tuning..

Do all your mods,, get the SEpST and dyno her.. then just ride...

havent touched mine since the cams (5yrs ago) and I don't have to worry/wonder about a piggy back system and she's never missed/skipped a beat..

If I got another one.. I would look around at some of the new ones that auto tune or just get the newer SEpST and a dyno... just me..

Ditto. I use the SERT only because it came with the Road King, but they are trying to shaft this dude. Haven't touched the stage ll 103 in 30,000 miles, the op might want to look at an independent shop. 800 bones for a tune is bullshit.

I've had a couple of bikes including this one with the stage 1, SERT, and dyno tune. Don't know how much cooler it runs. It's still hot as hell if you ask me. But I did get a few (not a lot) more horse power from the tuner. Gas mileage went down just a bit, but I probably wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't looking for it. I was getting a lot of deceleration popping after each of the stage 1s. They put it back on the dyno and now it's almost non-existent so I assume the dyno helps with that.
