Default Where to Camp?

[BTW, I tried searching this forum and didn't come up with anything]

I'm planning a trip from the Los Angeles area to Florida via Interstate 10 later this year.

I'll be riding solo on a TriGlide. My goal is not to meander and sightsee but to get there as quickly as possible. I'm thinking 500 mile days more or less.

I want to recapture some of my youth this time and tent camp along the way. How does one find safe impromptu places to set up a tent for a night?
35 years ago when my lady and I toured we planned our stops most nights at KOA camps. I don't even know if many still exist.

Is there a publication or website that lists viable places?

It's been a long time since I've slept on the ground, but I'm thinking of trying to get back into it, if my old bones will co-operate. The cost of motels, even flea bags, is killing me.

I found this site the other day. It lists campgrounds by state, with maps. It includes KOA's. They also hve a phone app. http://www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/campgrounds.htm

If you are a member of AAA they have brochures of approved campgrounds otherwise just surf the web. We did a trip a couple of years ago and once we established what town (or close) we were going to be at that night, the wife start searching on her I-Phone. It worked perfectly and we found some pretty cool places to stay. Good luck and have fun!

The wife and I camp a lot at state parks here in Florida and Georgia. We haven't camped while motorcycling though but have seen many that do. They are inexpensive, have clean showers and baths and you can make online reservations.

Check this thread; I am pretty sure another member posted a link to motorcycle campgrounds. I know I have it bookmarked at home but I am at work right now.

I don't know if you can still do it but, I used to just stop at rest areas and streach out on a table in the back.

I think this may be it. I thought the poster had mentioned there was also a smartphone app but that may not be correct.

If you are retired military you can search corp of engineers parks. KOA's exist all over. State parks are usually an easy to find with cheap camping.
