The touring bike will be more comfortable. That said, if you like the Softail and don't mind putting money into the bike you're never likely to get back, make the bike your own.

Had a Heritage Softtail and now a Road King. Would definitely choose the road king for long trips. Loved the Heritage but for me the RK is a much better long trip bike that works just as fine as the Heritage around town and on short trips.

Had a Fat Boy about 15 months ago and went through some similar thoughts. At the end, I found that the RK gave us about 1-2" more room between me and OL riding 2-up. That's not something you can add on a Softie. So if don't want or need the extra room, keep the Softie, as everything else can be upgraded. Good luck in your decision.

A softail isn't in the same solar system as a Road King ,when it comes to serious handling and traveling comfort. There's a reason for the name.

I've owned two tourers and the road king was my favorite tourer. I recommend getting the King as it is made to be a touring bagger. I think often and unfairly the softails are compared to the tourers. They are both great for what they are designed to do.

Two up, the Road King wins. The seating position for the passenger is much better.

Honestly, coming from a Heritage owner I'll say this:

It's a wonderful bike and does everything I need. I tour with it and I ride a lot no qualms about it.

I'll also say that I love to have a ladies legs wrapped around me. However, when it's 90 degrees out and your legs are rubbing against the sides of my belly and I'm sweating like a boss I wish I would have a road king.
