Default Help, on first day of trip, think voltage regulator fried

Voltage gauge went to 11, check engine light came on. Pulled off, fuses all good. Figured I'd keep going till it died, I was away from home anyway. Back on road gauge went back to 14 for 15 min but then pegged at 17. Lost headlights, taillights, cruise & 6th gear light. Went for about 50 miles like that then gauge went back to 15, got cruise & indicator light back but still no headlight/taillight. Blinkers working. Ran last 100 miles till dark like that. I'm an hour from J&P cycles so I could get a regulator in the morning or wait for diagnosis from harley dealer in town on Monday. Just don't want to replace regulator then get out of town with more issues. Can regulator be done in a parking lot with basic tools? All help appreciated.

If the gauge is showing that many volts I think its the voltage regulator. If it flip flops around it can be the stator/regulator/battery, but showing over voltage should narrow it down to the regulator.

How old is the battery anyway?

Battery is just one year old. I replaced original last year before just to be safe thinking it was 5 years old.

HAve you checked to see if you get a resistance reading off of the stator? Put one lead on stator plug, the other on the inner primary or case and see if you get a reading. If you get a reading the stator is dead. Your voltage regulator is def overcharging though. I hope it didnt cook your battery.

I had similar issues recently (but not over voltage, never went past 14) and replaced the expensive regulator just to have the battery die a week later. Think it was the battery all along. I'm just thinking over voltage implies regulator but I could be wrong... Hopefully someone else that had same issue chimes in.

Did you check to see if your stator has grounded itself yet?

Don't have test light or multimeter. When I head to J&P in the morning I'm hoping they will have. If it's a stator I'm stuck waiting for dealer on Monday morning anyway.

Indeed. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Wish there was something I could do for you.

Headlight problem solved. Put big lighting relay back in wrong slot when I was checking them. Guess off to J&P to buy a regulator though the bike is charging at 14 at idle right now?
