Default Should ABS mandatory on new bikes?

A recent study has found you are 37% less likely to crash your bike if you have ABS. It's been mandatory equipment like seat belts and air bags on cars for a while now, why not bikes? In fact it is more important on a bike than a car as locking the front wheel, say in a panic braking situation, causes an instant crash on a motorcycle. Making it mandatory rather than optional would lower the cost per bike of ABS significantly due to the efficiencies to be gained in manufacturing. As an example it is now a $500 dollar option on most bikes this could go down to maybe $200 extra on a new bike if they all had it. I think it is an option most of us want anyway. It is soon to become mandatory on motorcycles sold in Europe.

Making it mandatory may lower the cost per bike,

but not having it all would be cheaper.

Q: How did we all survive before computers controlling everything we do?
A: By doing it ourselves and taking responsibility when we f**ked up.

i dont want it and hope it is always an option

i am not delusional in the idea that i can brake "better" than abs, but when i use my brakes i am brakin a certain way intentionally and dont want anything between me and the pads hittin the rotor

plus i like to lock up the bike tire sometimes for fun

traction control on vehicles saves lives but i dont want that either. again if i hammer the gas it is intentional

I don't believe that it will lower manufacturing costs. I, like a lot of people, think people should have a choice. I don't like things forced upon me. It should be a choice but like most safety devices it will be mandatory someday soon. Just like most things today our choices are being chose for us. By the way I do like my abs.

What's next, a black box crash recorder?

How about breathalyzer tied into the ignition?

Who knows, this might even lead to helmet laws.. Oh wait, nevermind...

ABS systems on dual sport bikes like those from BMW allow the rear wheel to be locked in a user selectable off road mode. Locking the rear can be a useful technique for off road riders on sand or gravel but doing so on pavement is counter productive. You never ever want to ever lock the front wheel on a motorcycle, it will flip on it's side instantly, well before you can react and ease your grip on the brake lever. ABS is only active when the sensors detect imminent lockup of a wheel. It has no effect on braking otherwise. The only valid reason I see for not wanting it is cost, it's a performance enhancement as well as contributing to safety. It allows the average rider to brake as well as Valentino Rossi. Making it mandatory would lower that cost for the same reason it is now an insignificant cost in new cars. Can anyone remember when ABS was a $2000 option in a new car?

I'm so F*ckin' tired of the word mandatory....

The answer is NO! We don't always need to be protected from every damned thing!

Absolutely! While we're at it, let's add seatbelts and airbags. I'm feeling safer already!
