Back Fire @ 60mph, stalled, now cranks but wont start
I was cruising to hook up with friends at San Jacinto HD. While cruising along the Black bird (2002 Heritage Softail) coughed, the backfired a flame 3 or so feet long and rolled silent. I rolled off the expressway and into a Chillies parking lot. Called my friends and they rode over to my location. We went in to have a few brews and then to head home to get the toyhauler. Only after she cooled down, Black Bird fired up! So we took off and made it about 5 miles till she simply went silent. With a small fire response at start up and then nothing. After getting the bike home, Big D and I tested the system and thought the coil to be bad. I replace the Duel Fire coil and she still wont fire off (NO FIRE). Compression is good and no codes have formed in all ten segments of the read out. So this tells me that the CM must be good. I am leaning towards a Crank Position Sensor. Fuel is present and I drive the bike everyday. I have had very little trouble with the bike. Routine maintained. Heck, the bike has her own bed! LOL but seriously, I am drawing up blanks and need some good wisdom from the family of fellow riders on this one.

It sounds to me, like something is grounding out,
which would make the first coil seam bad, like maybe
a wire in that thing that holds the kill switch.
By the way welcome to the HDForum. When you get
your bike fixed, come on back in and hang around a while.

I had a similar experience and it turned out to be my ignition switch. It shorted out, caused a backfire, fired back up after sitting for a little bit. Take your console off and look underneath to see if the plastic surrounding the switch and near the connectors is burnt.

+1 on the crank position sensor. Had exactly the same problem with a car and have read another thread with the same problem. Fire it up, let it cut out, take and meter and check the sensor. If it's open it's bad. Should be a short across the sensor. If it's open let it cool and it'll go back to short. Heat causes the sensor to open.
