Unhappy Wtf

1988 fxst... Battery replacement. Hooked positive cable and now with the negative cable off... get 12.7 volts at solenoid ! I dont get it ! Only the positive cable is connected....the negative cable is in my hand. Unplugged stator to regulator no difference still reads 12.7 Volts at solenoid ( battery cable)thanks what gives Thanks dagasa101

I was taught to hook the negative up first. That might be your problem.

I am not much of a mechanic but if the solenoid is grounded either through the starter or through its own housing you would possibly get voltage potential.

If your grounding the volt meter to the negative side of the battery, you are completing the circuit and will register voltage. Always hook up the positive cable up first, less chance of shorting electronics out if wrench happens to come in contact with metal.

So hook up the other cable and go for a ride.

negative. always disconnect the ground first, and reconnect it last.

Maybe a capacitor is storing the voltage?
