CV Needle Jet and the Washers..??
While working on the cv on my 03...i removed the needle jet and found 3 washers on top of the e-clip pointing upwards, you know....where you put that plastic umbrella gizzywhopper over it and then the slide spring on top of the gizzywhopper....
i thought the washers go below the dad burn e-clip so as to raise the needle and not use the e-clip as a bumper when the flat slid comes down...
i have been looking for this answer and am getting stumped...
damm it jim... i need help.... william

On my old '90 FXR with the CV carb I used two washers under the clip so that the needle was raised up slightly in the jet, effectively richening up the mixture off idle and through the lower RPMs. I would think your '03 CV should operate the same way....

The washers are normally installed under the e-clip to raise the needle. This is usually done to raise the needle a lesser amount than what moving the e-clip up one notch would do.

most of the cv 's needles don't have but one clip ring.
the washers can be used to raise the needle , or just to take out the "slop" in the plastic holder .

Somebody probably put a carb kit in it already - and instead of using the washers to raise the needle (richen the low speed), they "saved them for a later date" so they wouldn't get lost in the toolbox.
JMHO of course.

If your needle has a clip then it is not stock, you don't need washers just move the clip up or down.m. I would get the factory needle and put 1 or 2 washers under it.

Yep, they pretty much don't do anything on top of the clip. Speaking of which, if it actually has a clip with grooves for multiple positions, then I don't believe it is the stock needle. The stock one only has a stopper on top and nothing above it.

There is a whole sticky or thread on cut n dried cv carb mods somewhere , maybe in the tech forum. I went thru the whole yost carb kit mess ........... And ended up taking that crap out and doing the mods suggested in the tech forum sticky thread. Very happy now.

BINGO....!!!!!!!!!! AND SORTED.................
They for sure go on top of the needle jet C-clip....
I had them underneath the C-clip which in turn let the needle jet " Float "
the needle jet was not being held tight...which is no good at all...
that made the fuel mixture very unstable....
I put them on top of the C-clip and put the white plastic spring seat over them and Bingo...
The needle jet is held firmly in place without any up and down movement...................Perfect......
i'll take her out today and beat on her like always do and see if she acts better.....
i know she will.................
thanks guys for all your support....Willieeeeeeee...

Willie....wake up......wake up Willie, you're dreaming again.
Those washers do not go on top of the needle clip. Not ever.
They're made to shim the needle underneath the clip so you can make fine adjustments to the needle by raising the needle in 1/3 step increments. There is a white (sometimes black) plastic hold-down that goes over the needle and clip and keeps the return spring centered. That spring also holds everything firmly down in the slide.
If you put all of the shims under the needle clip you essentially richened the mixture about a full step. It would definitely run like the needle was "floating".
Try a single shim at a time, leaving the rest out of your carb completely.
And get yourself a shop manual.
You can also find exploded views of that carb on the internet.
