Default Impact Driver Recommended?

I'm just starting to learn/do some basic stuff with my 2010 FLHTK and 1997 FXSTC. I've heard people recommend getting an impact driver for jobs such as removing the derby cover. I'm considering picking one up. Any recommendations for me? What chuck size, etc?

Any brand will do, it's hard to get a cheap impact driver due to the fact you're hitting it with a hammer they're made well. The important part is the bits you use. Get a quality set.
Sockets, allens and torx.

Ditto on the quality bit set. You really shouldn't need a impact driver to remove a derby cover. Only needed on rare occasions..

Like when some peckerhead dealer service tech uses one to put on your derby cover.

No offense but you shouldn't need an impact driver to take off your derby cover, basic hand tools should work, I've used them and no problemo.

definitely shouldn't need one on the derby or any other covers on the bike, this is soft metal and over tightening or cross threading is too easy. I have been working on engines and customising bikes for decades and never found the need for an impact. But if you are make sure you get one with torque adjustments and variable speed control like the one Milwaukee has.

Thanks for the advise guys...would rather not fork over the money unless necessary. Looks like it isn't. I'll go with that!

I would think a good 1/4" and/or 3/8" drive torque wrench should be used a lot more than an impact driver. Tony

I've had an impact driver for over 40 years. Hardly ever used, but when I need it, it's there. Craftsman, Mac, Snapon are all good choices. You may never use on derby covers ( I did on a Sporty) but you may be surprised where you might need it. I would seriously add to your kit....maybe not priority, but a need in my opinion.

Get the best quality t-27 bits you can find.
Then just brief short trigger pulls will do the trick.
I bought a sears 1/4 inch small impact gun.
Comes in handy for lots of stuff in and outside the house too.
