I would like to remove the passenger pegs on my Fatboy Lo, but the right side peg is also used to mount the exhaust system. If I remove the bolt holding the peg, the bracket is loose. Just putting the bolt from the peg doesn't look like it would work.

Can I replace the peg bolt with the appropriately sized bolt from the local hardware store, or does it need to be hardened etc?
