Default H-D Adjustable Rider Backrest Tutorial/install

After a frustrated hour of trying to install the H-D Adjustable Rider Backrest I came across this awesome tutorial that helped me solve this installation.

http://www.baggersmag.com/tech/1110_...est/index.html

There was nothing to really show how this works on this forum and the Harley site so this was a great help...hope this helps those who also are finding it difficult.

I know this is an old thread, but maybe your suscribed to it as you should be since you generated the thread. THANKS ALOT!!!! That post helped my out beyond belief. I put the harley directions aside and just used these. The part that had me stumped and ready to pack it up and bring it to harley to let them do it is where to put the retaining nut clip or whatever its called. Either way, this saved my *** and my pocket book. Harley's directions are GARBAGE for most of their stuff. Which is done like that for a reason.

This was the exactly what I needed. The factory diagrams were not very good at showing the placement of the actuator and these photo's are just right. thanks.

Same here. Exactly what I needed. Shame I did not see it when I installed mine some 3 weeks ago.

Keep hitting the "next" button, top right and it shows pics and description of each installation step.

The adjustable setup made a huge difference in the amount of time I could ride and being able to adjust on the fly as needed.

According to the 2014 Harley P&A catalog, the adjustable mounting kit is:
52593-09A for '97 to '08 Touring
52596-09A for '09-later Touring (what I have on my 2014 Limited)
54099-10 for '09-later Trikes

Then you need the backrest itself and they have 5 different styles.

Mounting kit is $219.95
Backrest is $109.95

These can be had for less at places like Surdyke and Kutter though.

My opinion is it is worth every penny, I can ride however long I want with zero back issues. I can adjust as I'm riding in seconds. Hope this all helps.

I've been contemplating a back rest for awhile now, but I only would want a non adjustable one. Harley doesn't have one for a TG - only adjustable ones. Don't know why.
Don't want to pay that much for something I probable wouldn't use much anyway. On long trips I have a Saddlemans "Dresser" luggage which also acts as a back rest. I also wear a back support(kidnet belt for you old timers) and that alone is worth it's weight in gold.....and only costs about $50.
