Default pull behind tailer

I've built one of those harbor freight trailer with a car top cargo carrier. I had read that a longer tongue is best for bike control, so I extended the length. Now my question is: what is the proper weight at the hitch? To me it feels a little heavy. Should I have left the center of gravity back further? Last year was my first season with the trailer and I seemed to use up the back tire in the 2500 miles of pulling the trailer. Thank you for any advice.

Depending on the hitch, they say no more than 45lbs of tongue weight. I've gone over that but I try not to.
Cheers!

I pull a bushtec trailer been doing it for years and have not noticed a problem with tire wear. I normally run with 20-25 # of tounge weight and don't even know its back their, but then again I usually limit the load to 75#s

Thanks guys. I know I'm not running more than 45lbs so it must be the extra weight in the back seat.

My trailor is fairly heavy and I have a fully loaded ice chest on the tongue, riding two up. I have noticed more than average tire wear. I also have independant suspension and have gone over fifty lbs on the tongue with no handling issues. I also would recommend a swivel hitch. It's not a necessity but I like mine.
Cheers!
