Hi, my 1989 Heritage starter just spins when hitting the switch. It sounds like something is not engaging. Is it repairable or do I need a new starter.
Thanks

Don`t go to the Harley dealer and buy a starter, it will cost a fortune.

You do not need a new starter, you just need to replace the starter clutch. The cost is in the neighborhood of 55 bucks.

Since the starter is almost 25 years old, you might consider taking the starter to a alternator/starter shop and have them rebuild it (and replace the starter clutch).

These starters are commonly used on small automobiles, and are not expensive to rebuild, I had the starter from my `89 Softail rebuilt about a year ago for 80 bucks, it was done in one day.

A basic rundown of the job:

Disconnect battery, remove outer primary cover, remove starter jackshaft bolt.

Disconnect wires from starter, remove starter mount bolts, remove starter.

Worst part of the job on a Softail: the oil tank must be removed.

Remove the inner fender behind the oil tank, it will make it much easier to access the rear of the tank. A good time to replace all the oil hoses.

Replace the o ring and tablock on the starter jackshaft bolt. Torque per service manual.

Cheers Dude.
Do you reckon I should replace the throwout bearings?
