Basically all internal combustion engines are heat pumps and as such simply convert chemicals (gasoline/diesel) into energy in the form of heat. Sounds to me like the thermal efficiency of your engine is lower than that of your friends' bikes. Truth be told, there are so many variables, even in apparently identical machines, that there will always be differences in thermal efficiency. In your case though, a 25% difference in mileage is pretty extreme. I would guess you're just running a richer mixture than your friend. Try comparing plug colors and see if they look different.
