Default 1986 sportster

So I went to look at a 86 sportster and there was 2 things that concerned me. 1) the guy said that it was leaking oil out of the bottom of the oil can, he said he fixed it with a new clamp but would leak a couple of drops after a run. 2) when he tried to start it, it started leaking gas under the tank right behind the air filter. He said he would get someone to fix these things, but I'm concerned is this a reoccurring problem? Is it easy to fix myself if it happens again? Any tips?

I have an 89 deluxe so my bag drain is a little different but the placement of the actual plug is the same. It's small and very easy to get corroded or banged. He may hate it but I would just get a light and push on it and see if the actual drain out of the oil bag is broken or just a tax corroded. As for the gas it may be the overflow for the carb it the hose is t attached. That's as easy as going through the carb to make sure it's clear and free of debris. The rebuild kit costs a whole $40 and should take you about 20 minutes. Maybe and hourif your not mechanicly inclinded.

The bike is almost thirty years old and anything can happen during that time! It is unlikely to be a 'recurring' problem after all those years, but a consequence of old age and possibly neglect. The gas leak is almost certainly the carb over-flowing, or possibly worn out hose from the gas tap. SportsterSnow has covered the oilbag.

If you decide to buy it get yourself a factory service manual, available from any dealer, and make yourself familiar with the on-line parts websites like this one, where you can get details of every part of it. You can alternatively buy the parts book, again from any dealer.

I have (my wife rides) a 1993 model 883/1200. It's a great bike. Runs great all the time. If the price was right I'd buy any year evo sporty. They are easy to work on. Parts are available. Over the years I've had a few evo sportsters and never had a bad one (or, real bad one anyway). Even if the oil tank and the gas tank are leaking you'll find them cheap at a swap meet someplace. If it's anything less than a 1200cc you can convert it easy. I have a big twin but, I love riding a fast sporty.
