Consider the ferry from Orient Point to New London, that will get you around all the traffic, but as Architect said, you need to make reservations.
The coastal road in Maine can be a nightmare in Summer due to traffic, but this early in the season it is probably good.
There is no reason to do that, just let the motorcycle`s suspension do it`s job.

Just a follow-up on the trip, the trailer worked great, about 575 total miles. I used 6 straps, 2 heavy straps on the fork tie-down brackets I bought from Harley, one heavy strap across and through the rear wheel to hold the back stable, 2 med. duty straps on the floor board brackets and one short medium duty strap around the front wheel strapped to the Condor chock. I pulled the bike down to a carpeted wooden block under the frame, the bike didn't move at all. Spent one day doing a local ride to Booth Bay and back, one day touring New Hampshire including Laconia, one day in Massachusetts including Gloucester and one day riding local, the weather started to turn that last day. Weather was GREAT the entire week, 70-75 every day. Ate plenty of lobster and BBQ and met some real nice people. Rode a little over 800 miles for the trip...thanks for all the tips and good wishes.
