Default Miles Per Tankful?

What's the longest anyone has gone on a tankful of fuel without running dry? The light comes on awful early, and I'm just wondering how far I can safely go without sucking fumes. I read that a lot of the early models had problems with the pick up, so I've been carrying an extra liter of fuel in a stainless jug, and would like to ditch that if I can.

I go by mpg which I learn by using the trip odo and divide the gallon amount into it. I have learned over the past 4,000 miles on it that it exceeds 50 mpg at the least. 51 mpg at 75 mph on the trip to Sturgis last year. So I run about 150 miles then fill up. Easy peasy.

On our local roads at 55 mph I can go over 180 miles but it is not as likely as I need to pee before 180 miles.

This miles by the tankful thing, where does this come from? It's not objective. Please post your mpg, engine and mods.

I have a 2011 XL883L Super Low and I'm only getting about 30-35 MPG. Dunno why.

I usually get 140-150 (160+ if it's all highway) before I have to switch to reserve.

When I fill up I usually put about 3-4 gallons in, which equates to about 40mpg.

Check the air filter, it could be dirty or clogged. I gained 3 mpg by going to a K&N.
