Default Please Help: Gas dripping non-stop

2009 Sportster Iron and gas has been dripping all day..

I filled up the tank.. I did top it off, but I rode to work and back.. about 30 miles.. so if it was overflow it should be done.. but its dripping non-stop all yesterday and today.. more than a gallon & half..

When I see under the tank, I see a panel that you can open (an electric wire coming out) and there is a small metal chorme thing that sticks out to which a flex tube is attached.. the leak is by the metal chrome thingy.. and its loose and I can even turn it and when I jiggle it the dripping picks up..

Is there a way turn off the fuel flow? is it safe to ride to the shop? what can i do to atleast stop this for now..

Thanks

See Pictures:
1. You can see the bubble forming by the green arrow
2. I can twist the chrome thing by the red arrow and it keeps turning

Is that a fuel quick connect fitting? Pull up on the silver sleeve then pull down on the black fuel supply line and see if it releases. Put a rag underneath so the fuel from the supply line don't go all over the place.

Yep do that and then change the o ring. Just a generic one from any auto parts store, that's what I did 12 months ago and no problems since.

I had my quick connect replaced when it was leaking. There are threads where people say they just replaced the o-ring. I played around with my old one, couldn't get the ring out without destroying it.
I wouldn't ride until it is fixed.

Doesn't matter if you trash the old one getting it out, it's going in the bin anyway. Just need to be careful not to damage the new one installing it. And yes, don't ride it, fuel dripping on a hot motor between your legs is not good!!

The o-rings are not generic. Some generic ones will disappear in fuel. I believe Drag Specialties may carry some of the o-rings in repair kits. I know people who have used hardware store o-rings. Some leaked, some did not. I believe they are Viton.

Replace the O ring in the fuel disconnect upper which is HD Part# 11273 . Be aware there are two o rings up in the female end which is screwed into the gas tank. A small mirror, flashlight with a pick tool will do the job removing the o ring. Buy the o rings prior so you know what your looking for. The o ring sits about half way up into the female piece. DO NOT remove the the thicker/smaller o ring which sits all the way up inside. More than likely its the other as I mentioned. Good luck, keep us posted.

For future reference disconnecting the fuel line will stop the leak.

Push up on the chrome sleeve and pull the fuel line straight down to disconnect.

Ok maybe I just got lucky. Sorry if that was misleading at all.
