Default What would cause an ICM to melt?

Guys,

This stems off a previous post about the coil "leaking goop" from the coil, which turned out to be it actually overheating and melting the plastic housing. Probably from the owner leaving the key on for an extended period of time. It's a 2005 Dyna FXD.

My question is that I ran all the electrical tests in the manual and it's pointing to a faulty ICM, when I removed it.. I noticed the housing on the ICM had also melted?? All electrical connections and grounds seem to check out. Any idea why this would be happening?

Bad ICM. Also check the charging system after you replace it.

Thanks JustDave13.. Another question.. Any idea why there would be a different part number in the module I just removed (32478-04A), but the shop parts list calls for a 32622-04A? New part number? Part seems to be the module for a 883XL 04-06??

A quick google search says your first number is for a XL Sportster and the second number is for a 05 FL touring bike. Looks like they might be the same . found this old bulletin.

Required Dealer Action
Make sure Digital Technician is updated with version 13.10 or
later. Check, and if necessary, update vehicles as they come
in for normal service:
1. Check part number printed on ICM label. If part number
is 32478-04A or 32622-04A, no further action is necessary.
2. If part number printed on ICM label is NOT 32478-04A
or 32622-04A, connect Digital Technician to vehicle, navigate
to System ID screen and view actual part number
stored internally in ICM.
3. If part number stored internally is 32478-04 or 32622-04,
perform reflash operation and download new ICM strategy
and PPU software update by reloading the stock calibration.
4. Verify the ICM part number has been updated to 32622-
04A in System ID.
NOTE
After performing the update operation, you should update the
part number printed on the ICM label. Thoroughly clean label
to remove grease, oil and dirt. Cover old part number with
correction fluid such as Liquid Paper
®
or an adhesive label.
Print new part number (32622-04A) on ICM label with indelible
ink.
IMPORTANT NOTE
In the interest of preserving customer safety and satisfaction, always check for outstanding recalls whenever any motorcycle is brought into your
dealership for either maintenance or service.
