Default Questions on ECM replacement...

I've posted these questions in another thread, just figured I'd try to get a few more looks to help out.

1)Does anyone know where the best place to buy an ECM would be?
2)Is it okay to buy a used one?
3)Is there a list of compatible ECM's between certain years/bikes that are compatible?

Sorry for the bombardment of questions, I just want to save as much as possible.

Bike in question is a 2000 Electra Glide Classic, fuel injected.

I would like to know also. But the mm system has no love & the options are few. Think used is ok but twin cams are only two or three years, not sure if the ecm from a evo's would work. Someone on this site got a S&S ecm this year & right after a member said he had a used one. I have wards fans on my bike to try to keep this old system happy.

Thanks, now can someone tell me with absolute certainty that a RK ecm will marry to an Electra Glide? Can't seem to find a definitive answer on the Google....

I would think all touring bikes would be the same. You can check on on line site like Ronnie Harley to see if they have same part number. Looks like from the eBay links they are grouped from 99-01 to be the same.

If you can find a Harley 41000012A ECM, that would be best. This is the ECM that Harley sold as a replacement for the stock MM ECM. It is actually a re-badged S&S VFI system, and is fully tunable with the S&S Super Tuner software (free download on S&S's website).

You should be able to use any ECM off of any 1999-2000 Harley touring bike. Or, as others have said here get the S&S VFI.

Consider using a parts finder such as Ronnies.
You can check year & model.
Then just scroll over item category rapidly to see diagrams flash until you find what you need.
You can then look and write down numbers to compare years for compatible units.
But first, what is wrong with the present ECM ? how was it diagnosed as the problem?
Reason: I have read and heard of people getting all upset with a problem and deciding to change an ECM, injectors and all sorts of parts and then changing to a carb out of frustration when something simple like a crank sensor was bad.
Here is link to part finder:

Checked all switches and sensors. Dealer ran a test on the ecm to confirm it was fried. Easy sign was that it was missing the rubber boot and the ecm was half full of water.

You should be good with a ECM for most FL's, 1999 to 2000.
As suggested, go to Ronnie's and look up you bike and year and they will most likely list the most recent one that works.
Yes, you can get used from eBay, but like with any used part there is no guarantees. You will need to have the bike VIN changed in the ECM if you are using a Flash tuner that is married to your old ECM, and you will need to remarry the TSSM/TSM module.
