I have a 1993 Sportster and when me and my dad started working on it it wouldn't even start. We found out that the coil was bad so we replaced it and it ran perfectly for around a month before one day the tach started to go wild and it just shut off on me mid ride. After I stopped I tried to start the bike back up ,but it wouldn't turn over.
What could be wrong? Could the new coil have gone bad or could something else be frying the coil? Could it be the ignition module? We really don't want to spend an arm and a leg sending it to a shop.

 

Check the timer cup for hitting the pick up - very common. Didn't crank or didn't start - big difference.

 

It would crank. It just wouldn't turn over.

 

I think you should buy a service manual and follow the diagnostic - the $50 investment will go a very long way. Buy the H-D manual - nothing aftermarket.
