Default Run/Stop switch doesn't turn off the bike

I am new to the forum and this is my first post, so forgive me for any mistakes I may make.

I have just picked up a 1995 FLHTC and have discovered that the "run/stop" switch doesn't kill the bike. In the "off" position the bike will not start. It will start in the "run" position, so that is working as it should. I have to use the ignition switch to turn off the bike. I suppose it's not that big of a deal, but I like things to work as they should.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Thanks for any insight and advice you guys may have.

Don`t go out and by a new switch, that`s not the problem.

The problem is in the wiring that is supplying power to the coil/ignition module.

Either someone has modified the wiring, or possibly screwed up the position of the wire at the connector.

Do you have a multimeter?

Yes, sir. I do. and thank you for the response. I tested the switch yesterday and I believe it's functioning as it should. Yet the power to the coil is coming from somewhere. I'm confused. lol

Welcome from Hampton Roads Virginia. Be sure to add a signature line on your 1995 FLHTC similar to mine with your bike name. I am looking at wiring diagrams now for you . Your problem is an odd one.

Thank you! I hate to sound dumb but what's a "signature line"? Forgive me. I'm new to this.

We know the switch is functioning properly because the starter does not energize with the switch in the off position.

Somehow the coil and ignition are getting power from another source.

Do all other electrical components work properly?

Can you get at the connector for the right hand control switches?

Everything else seems to function as it should. I haven't noticed any other quirks. I took apart the right side controls to test the switch and check for pinched wires but haven't gotten as far as the connector yet. it's my first bagger and haven't figured out where everything is located yet. figured I better ask someone before I just tore into it.

I think you can do the signature. Usually a new member needs enough post to make sure he is going to stay to get all options. Can you see my wiring diagrams?

Not sure which applies. But may help. You may get close to these item and see were someone has cut into them and ran other wires. Interest that like Dan says, the switch is working since its first connection is start switch. So obliviously, the remaining wire to coil has been cut and wired directly to ignition switch. I think.

I am all for safety and think every thing should work but I just never learned to use the switch. There is a bank angle to kill bike if you go down. A vacuum switch on your bike to shut off gas. On mine, a fuelpump kill. When I do use it, if someone distracts me, I forget to kill lights. But I sure would make it work correctly since I share my bike
