Default Poor TMAX MGP? Check your speedo/odo calibration!!!

Just wanted to throw something out there with regards to those who have a TMAX, and are unhappy with their fuel economy.

I've had my TMAX for most of this riding season, and have been VERY happy with it. Its tuned in nicely and the bike runs better then I could ever hope for.

My MPG hung around 32mpg, which isn't horrible, considering my riding style (lots of WOT). So I never really gave it much thought.

I never gave the speedo/odo any thought, either. However, a few weeks ago after riding with my dad one afternoon, I came to find out that I was running at least 6-7mph faster then what was indicated on my speedometer. Keep in mind, if the speedometer says you're going slower then you actually are, then most likely, the odometer will be showing less miles being travelled then actual.

So I did some research, and came to find that it isn't uncommon for the speedo readings to be off on the TMAX, despite programming in the 'correct' value for a given year/model per the TMAX instructions.

I reprogrammed the speedo calibration number (I took it from 45900 down to 42000 - about 9%, which is about how much off my reading vs. actual was), and now my speedo is spot on with other bikes I ride with. I also did several tests on the highway against mile markers and that was spot on as well.

To make a long story short - I am now getting 38-40mpg, and that is with riding the bike REALLY hard between fill-ups. I also now see about 120 miles before my fuel light comes on. Prior to this change, I was only seeing about 90 miles before the fuel light came on.

Bottom line - If you have a TMAX and aren't happy with your MPG - check to make sure your speedo/odo are reading correctly!!!
