Here is a link from Exxon that shows the many various gasoline blends required in the US:

http://www.exxon.com/usa-english/gfm...soline_map.pdf

Many areas have different requirements at different times of the year. (here in Indiana the price drops right before the gas requirement change over usually) Here are the seasonal requirements for Indiana conventional gas (not for Gary or Louisville areas that require reformulated gas):
http://www.countrymark.com/countryma...ductspecs.aspx

Here are the areas required to have reformulated gasoline for EPA pollution control:

Here is the latest info on the E15 for 2001 and newer model year vehicles:

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/fuels/a.../e15/index.htm

Earlier someone mentioned race gas, many of the race gas products available also contain ethanol:
http://www.racegas.com/fuel/17

Since Harleys do not have knock sensors, at this time, additional octane will not give increased ignition timing like it might on a knock controlled auto engine.

Whaaa??? Which land of Oz were we IN???
Anyhoo, I wish I knew what those designations on the fuels in that chart stood for. I'd really like to know WHAT they're sellin' me and where I can ride to get better fuel.

In Ga., we notice a drop in mileage in fall.

The DIY and Tech forms have been merged. This was in the engine area instead of the fuel.

The REAL fix, is to tune a bike accordingly. Nowadays... I will tune a bike using 87 or 89 Octane. NOT high test. Octane, in and of itself makes NO power, what it does do is allow higher compression without ping. A decent complete tune will do this also.

This is THE reason to use a flash tuner and NOT some add on BS.

And... yes, HArley does not use knock sensors... that is soooooo 1990s. Harleys DO use ION sensing from the ignition coils to sense knock... just like HiPo GM cars made today. The Z06 uses Ion sensing.

Removing ethanol from gas would result in gas with a reduced octane level (the alcohol provides a few octane points). Plus you'll probably blow yourself up. Two big downsides to that project. Use the right treatment and it's no big deal.

We just buy pure gasoline from the dealer in what ever octane we want. We pay a little more, but reap the benefits.

Fortunately for me, the gas station closest to my home (a farm co-op) offers both 87 and 91 octane no-ethanol gas. It's a win win for me. 87 for the lawn equipment and 91 for my bike. 80-90% of my bike fill ups are with this station. While I do end up with some ethanol in my tank from time to time, near the end of the season like it is here, I've been exclusively using this station.

I just finished reading this entire thread! And I am in awe and completely ashamed as to our society has let the EPA rule against the improper induction of mis fueling and their decision to close the petition identified by Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2010-0448
So I'm petitioning to re open it again. Follow the link if you want to get involved. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takea...76/?cid=FB_TAF
