Default Harley Diagnostic Codes

My Road King had some sputtering issues and I had some codes

I could not find any info on codes here but saw a lot of people asking about them and have had no replies. My piece of crap dealership service manual does not have them so I did some research and came up with the following.

Can someone double check me to make sure this is correct?

Harley Diagnostic Codes

To access codes

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" (on mine the “t” looks more like a “╘” )with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

1 - Record the codes.

2 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 3 If the code is current it will reappear.

4 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

5 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

Thank you for helping me get back on the road after breaking down on the highway today! While waiting for the dreaded tow back home, I found this thread and was able to read the codes, fix the issue, and get back on my way!

Great post. It just helped me out too. Anyone know what to do about a P1009 Incorrect password code? I just recently installed my PCV (along with pipes and air cleaner) and have logged about 150 miles. Now on 3 straight start ups my check engine light has come on about 3 seconds after it goes out from starting and it stays on for about 5 seconds and then remains out.

This is GREAT info! Although I went through the procedure as outlined above and had no codes to show up. My bike still coughs, sputters and almost dies at idle. I have put in new plugs, wires, air filter. Cleaned the throat / butterfly in the throttle body. If anyone has any suggestions which way to go next, it would be greatly appreciated. I have also ran 2 tanks with rocket fuel.
My bike is a 05 FLSTNI Deluxe.

Default Code B2017

B2017 is 'Open Front Speaker'...if you have an amp installed, this is fine. I found this out last night while upgrading my radio software...

You should check your radio's software version, I'd assume it's up to date being you have an '11...but can't hurt. This is where you'll see the code as well.

turn radio to down all the way
turn off ignition
holding 1 and 2 buttons on radio turn switch to ignition and then to accessory
after the radio boots, you'll see a new series of menu items
press 4 for SOFTWARE
this is where you'll see your version v8.19 (8.25) is the latest version if you don't have that, then go to harley's webpage and search for radio software update (i used google and the first link was into HD's site for the download.

unzip the files to a directory you'll remember (i add a new folder to the desktop called HD)
burn those files (there are only 2 files) to a cd using a slow burn rate (they suggest 8 or lower)

do the same instructions to get into radio diag mode and hit 5 UPDATE...(make sure there is no CD in the radio before you do this)

once you hit 5 for UPDATE it will ask to insert CD...insert the disc with the two files on it you just burned...the system will take it from there. you can watch the steps...took about 5-10 minutes for mine.

if all it says is VERIFYING DSP IMAGE and doesn't change, you might have to burn at a slower rate...or use a different burning software.

when it's done the radio will come on...go into radio diag mode to be sure the v8.19 (8.25) software is there.

eject the disc and ride on!

I can't get the menu to come up. The only thing that keeps popping up is the letters "d01CLr" and if I press the reset button again the "01" changes to "02" and so forth up to the number "10" then "PPU" then "82883" which is not the miles on the bike.
Help!

Have you found out what the code PPU 82883 meant? I am having the same issue and my bike shuts down after it gets warm! Anyone know what the problem can be?

The original poster said there is nothing wrong......

"After all the diagnostic codes are displayed, the speedometer's pulses per unit (PPU) setting is displayed. This number will vary depending on speedometer part number.

SPEEDOMETER TROUBLE CODES

CODE - TROUBLE - WIRE COLOR
d01 - speed sensor power output shorted low - red
d02 - speed sensor power output shorted high - red
d03 - not used
d04 - not used
d05 - speed sensor return shorted high - white
d06 - speed sensor return shorted low - white
d07 - not used
d08 - peedometer power overvoltage - orange/white
d09 - speed output shorted high - white/green
d10 - speed output shorted low or open - white/green
5 digit number - speedometer pulses per unit"

also "CLR means clear.

Again, not my answer, copied from elsewhere a while back as a reference.
