Bike went into "limp" mode
Went to Myrtle Beach this weekend for Fall Rally. Bike ran great until trip home. We had been running about 75-80 on I-40 for about 45 minutes. All of a sudden, engine light comes on and I have no throttle response. I "limp" to a gas station where my friends were. We start making plans to get the bike home and I tried cranking the bike. Cranks fine and runs fine. We leave the gas station, everything is good. Went about 3 miles, same problem. We finally remove the seat and unplug the ECM. Blew out the connection and reinstalled. Bike ran fine rest of the way home. Comments/suggestions!

Hmmm weird you say that. I was out for a nice fall ride and stopped at a local watering hole for a beer. When I went back out to start it the check engine light stayed on and it wouldn't rev past 2000 rpm. I shut the key off and tried again with the same result. I tried several more times. I then turned the ignition on and let it stay on for 5 minutes or so then it fired up and ran great. After every stop tonight the engine light came on like it suppose to then goes off. It would start up and rev fine but then the engine light would come on for 15 seconds or so then it would shut off. Curious why limp mode would come on.

My 09 EG Classic did that after about 15K miles. Pull over, shut down for 10 seconds, fire it back up & it could be fine for 2 more miles, or it could be fine for 2 weeks. Turns out that Harley actually knows about this (after denying it for awhile), and it was corrosion at the end of a wiring harness, going from the throttle down behind the fairing. It was a warranty thing too. Never had another problem after it was fixed. Sorry I can't be more technical than that (I'm not much of a mechanic myself) but I could find out EXACTLY what mine was, if you wanna know --- if you don't get a dealer to admit it. I remember a few other people on here who had the same problem.

Unplug the connector to the TCA( behind air cleaner) and put some dialectric grease on the connection. As already stated, some bad connections from the motor company. If it happens again, you can cycle your ignition switch 4 or 5 times quickly and it will reset the ECM. Been there, done it!

Great info guys. After work I went to the dealer and they looked up the codes. 1511 I think it was. Anyway he showed me the common connection problem behind the air cleaner or it could've been the throttle wire connection inside the handle bars. I believe the engine light came on because my buddy tried to rev the engine while I was starting the bike. The dealer reset the code and no problems since.

Had the same problem at Biketoberfest and again today on a Toys for Tots ride. Goes into limp mode and only idles, pull off on the shoulder, turn off ignition and kill switch, wait about 20 seconds, and it runs normal again. Based on info found on here, will clean and put dielectric grease on the connection behind breather and ECM connection under seat. Hope that will fix the problem.
