Default Wiring for 2007 and up Speed Sensor

Hey Guys, I'm in the middle of building a custom bike. I'm using a '07 Dyna 6 speed. I'm at a lost trying to wire the Vehicle Speed Sensor to the ignition module I'm using. There are 3 wires of course. I believe there is a Black for Ground, a White for Signal Out, and a Red for what I believe is +5vdc provided from the ECM or Ignition Module. Anyway, in what order are they wired to the connector? If anyone could look at their connector plug and tell me the order from the top of the plug down (while plugged in at a diagonal)and tell me the color code or something. Perhaps someone might have a schematic diagram too of just what leads are what for that VSS. Much appreciated.

Default Wiring for 2007 and up Speed Sensor

Well, I'll have to answer my own question for those in the future who will need to know. I located and scanned the wiring diagram for an '08 Softail and included it here.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) for an '08 will have 3 wires:

Terminal 1 (A) is Red/White and it is 5v+ (sensor voltage)

Terminal 2 (B) is White/Green and is the VSS lead to the ECM

Terminal 3 (C) is Black/Green and it is wired to ground.

Question No speed reading

How does this type of sensor work with a carbureted engine? I notice the diagram includes an ECM. Do I need to run the wires through the harness, or can it all go right into the speedometer? I can't get the speedo to register any speed. Lights work and it snaps the needle to the right, then no speed...

of course your lights work they have nothing to do with your speed sensor. If your carburated engine has a speed sensor it should work from that. The speed sensor is like a proximity switch that picks up on either magnets inside the engine or a lobe on a gear or something idk. But thats all its just counting the revolutions and adjusting accordingly. You will need some device to send analog feedback to the speedometer via the white wire which could be the ignition module if you don't have an ecm.

In 2007 the Speed sensor sends information to ECM. ECM sends it to speedometer.

Right but I think the dude with the carb was saying he didn't have an ecm. Prolly an older bike that he wanted to get away from mechanical speedometer. Hes gonna need a speed sensor and some aftermarket ignition modile or something that can send info to the speedometer.

Like I have an 08 twin cam but I'm using a motogadget m.unit and a thunderheart ignition. I shitcanned all the harley stuff on the bike the fuses, ecm, fuel injection and went to a carb. So I kinda am in the same boat. The thunderheart ignition controls the speedometer on my setup. I have to use an inline speed adjuster to dial it in.

After I think it was 2004 all went the ECM to speedometer route. The 07 his engine and trans came from had an ECM.
If he has an older Speedometer that worked off the speed senor directly then it will work.
Sped sensor off an EVO should work.
Dakota Digital makes several product that help deal with issue he may encounter .
