Default Bad Voltage Regulator?

Hello and Happy Holidays!
Last night my instrument panel lights started shutting on and off - bike was running fine.
DTCs read: P0563/b0563 (Battery Voltage High) and b1006/b1007 (Line Overvoltage Instruments).
Put a volt meter to battery - reads 17 volts when revving the engine.
Question 1: Could the problem be anything OTHER THAN the regulator?
Question 2: Does anyone recommend any of the aftermarket regs (Accel, Volt Tech, Drag Spec, etc.) over the OEM Harley part?
Thanks for any advice,
KK

1. I doubt it very seriously

2. I don't know man.. Hard to beat some of the HD OEM parts. I'd go back with the same part.

1. Clean and tighten all connections, battery etc. Clear your codes and try again.
2. Depending on year and warranty existence you could be covered for stock regulator.

Before the 3 phase systems from '07 (?) and later, the older style units failed on me regularly. The stator on my '00 RG failed 3 times in less than 60,000 miles, making my volt gauge the most important gauge on the dashboard for me. I got home safe because it warned me something was wrong.

I installed a 3 phase from Compufire (stator and regulator,) at 57,000 miles and the system has been stone cold reliable for the last 90,000 miles.

Cycle Electric also makes comparable quality units too, (that work with OEM stators if you choose to go that route.)

Need to perform a charging system test, could easily be a stator or rotor problem.

Hi All:
Thanks much for the responses. I checked and cleaned all connectors and grounds (contact areas and mounting bolts) and, after reassembly, the battery still reads 14 volts at idle and 17 volts after I rev the engine for a few seconds. So... I'm going to gamble that it's the reg. Prices on ebay for OEM regs (from out-of-state dealers) was not that bad so I went ahead and ordered one. Hope it comes soon because it's PERFECT riding weather here in CA (he - he).
Thanks again for all the great advise.

Personally I think you're right too. Let us know how it goes and what you bought.
