Default P0502 VSS High/Open Carb - would it make it backfire?

On my 2005 883C Sportster I am getting this code.

My speedo works and believe my turn signals, which is what I read is effected by the VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor.

Bike idles fine - but does pop and backfire on throttle advance and start off sometimes.

Runs fine at speed, but will backfire out the carb randomly.

Just replaced all 3 carb intake gaskets and cleaned carb. No exhaust or intake leaks detected currently.

Would this sensor or a weak battery kick off this code?

I am going to reset and see if it comes back again.

Was thinking I had a bad CPS, not a bad VSS.
